Our media training courses for law firms have been created to meet the specific requirements of lawyers doing media interviews. We work with a range of law firms from members of the magic and silver circles to smaller and specialist organisations.

As we say in our media coaching sessions, if you’re asked to do an interview with a journalist it will almost certainly be to do one of three things. First, you’re promoting something (a new product or service) or second, you’re defending something (you’ve treated someone badly, you’ve made a mistake, or you’ve had to make an unpopular decision). The third reason will be that you’re commenting on something.

Although we cover all three scenarios in our workshops, we know from our extensive experience of working with law firms, that lawyers are most likely to be involved in the third option – they’re commenting on an issue.

Role play press interviews with feedback and tips for lawyers

Our role play press interviews allow solicitors to experience an authentic interaction with a journalist in a safe space. We’ll give detailed, constructive feedback and recommendations afterwards which the participant can then bring into their next interview. Our media trainers are all working journalists and producers (operating under strict NDAs) and so they know what it’s like to interview lawyers in the real world. They then bring this real world experience to bear in our media training courses.

We provide advice and techniques to help lawyers to gain more control during a media interview. Our preparation tips enable them to get their messages across and to navigate risky or unhelpful questions posed by the journalist. We also help the lawyers on our media training courses to give the examples and case studies that journalists are constantly looking for and that help interviewees to get better media coverage, without compromising client confidentiality.

Advice for lawyers appearing on television

The broadcast element of our media training courses for law firms allows participants to hear and see how they come across. Again, we provide tips and advice on vocal skills and body language before putting the solicitors we work with through authentic radio, TV and Zoom-style interviews.

Very often lawyers think that being interviewed by a journalist is like talking to a regulator or a judge. They believe that short answers are safer. In fact, as they find out, this is not the case with media interviews. It’s great to see lawyers learning, as the course progresses, to take the initiative, to set out their stall at the start of the interview and to take charge of it throughout. This gives them more control and increases the likelihood of positive coverage.

“Lawyers are from Mars and journalists are from Venus,” one of our trainers likes to say and it’s true that the two professions are very different. However, it’s good to see on our media training courses for law firms, lawyers at all stages of their careers feeling empowered to work with their Comms teams to use the media to raise their profile and to win new clients.
